Thou, Sun, art half as happy as we,

In that the world's contracted thus;

Thine age asks ease, and since thy duties be

To warm the world, that's done in warming us.

Extract from The Sun Rising, John Donne (1572-1631)

Australian Goldfield burr and she-oak (Casuarina spp.)

Finished in cold-pressed, sun-bleached linseed oil and beeswax. Approximate size: 22 x 16 x 8 cm

A celebration of the influence of our sun on our well-being and emotions.

Burrs (burls) are bulbous, gnarly growths on trees, which yield timber highly prized for its figure. The exact cause of burrs is unknown, but it may be due to some form of localized stress, such as physical damage, insect attack, infection, etc. Goldfield burrs are harvested mainly from various eucalyptus species growing in the Goldfield regions of Eastern and Western Australia; harvesting these burrs does not harm the tree.

The Swedish linseed oil used to finish this piece incorporates no chemical driers.
